The Bandstand Brickwork is underway now the students at Highbury College have returned from their Summer Holidays and in the last 2 days has made excellent progress with the perimeter blue bricks nearing completion to the base. This includes the use of special angle and plinth bricks which it is unusual for Bricklaying Apprentices to lay so early in their training. The blue bricks are also a very tough brick to lay compared to a stock brick, but the quality is very very high.

Course Lecturer Adrian Colebourne said that “This is a valuable experience for the lads that you just cant replicate in the classroom. The Lads are adapting well to the outdoor environment”.

Jake Owen, one of the students working on the project said “this is great work experience and being outside of the classroom to build something permanent is awesome. I’ve never worked on a live project before and am looking to working off the scaffold when that arrives”.

Brickwork laid by the students in the classroom is assessed and then dismantled. This gives the opportunity to build something permanent.

The bandstand project is sponsored by about 15 firms in the Construction Industry and EHDC and local councillors have helped fund the works with £15,000 of local councillor grants and Dev Con funding.
